2-4-Tuesday (A Day Late)

It was a wet weekend in the state with several games washed out, others severely delayed. Even the Gators and the Seminoles dealt with the wet stuff -- Florida dealt with it a little better.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

We start the 2-fer by talking about Turner Baty (1), the one-time starting quarterback for Menlo-Atherton High in California became the high-profile backup at St. Thomas Aquinas (2).

Well Baty decided the bench wasn't his friend and has left Aquinas to enroll at New Canaan High School (3) in Connecticut. A friend of the blog says he'll easily be the top-rated quarterback in a state with an incredible weak crop of quarterbacks in that state this year.

Somewhere Matt Cassel (4) is preparing his life-after-football business on how to be a backup quarterback and make millions!

WHAT'S THE RULE

Well the rain caused an interesting caveat in last Friday's game between Jefferson (5) and Newsome (6) and it led to what basically turned out to be nothing more than a competitive scrimmage.

Thunderstorms caused a lengthy delay in the game and the third quarter had ended after 11 p.m. with Jefferson leading 29-28. Newsome was driving down the field and had possession near the 50 as the quarter had ended. Now according to Hillsborough County rules, the fourth quarter of a game cannot start after 11 p.m.

Two school adminstrators met and eventually the Jefferson AD sent in a call to Hillsborough County's Athletic Director, Lanness Robinson (7), and he decided to suspend the game.

Now Newsome was offered the opportunity to finish the game 9 a.m. Saturday but it was an official SAT day so Newsome opted not to and in the world of Jefferson head coach Mike Fenton (8) it became a victory.

“In my eyes, it’s still a win,” Fenton said. “We invited them to come back. They refused. If anything it should be a forfeit. There are a lot of questions to be answered, like what they would have done if it was a district game. And I want to know if other games started after 11.”

Luckily a wiser head (Robinson) prevailed and said either the game is finished or it doesn't count. They have the option to make it up at a later date, but somehow I don't see that happening.

SECOND CHANCE GRANTED

The blog is happy to announce that Lincoln (9) football coach Yusuf Shakir's (10) status has been changed from suspended to active after the school reinstated him based on a reduction from a DUI charge to a reckless driving charge.

Shakir, 31, was arrested days before the regular season started and suspended despite the support of the team and many of their parents. He will return to the sidelines Friday when the Trojans host Florida High (11). He returned to a 1-1 team that lost 2011 star athlete Javoris "Buck" Allen (12) for the season with a broken leg.

As part of Shakir's sentence reduction he will have to do 200 hours of community service and undergo alcohol counseling. He will also serve six months of probation and have his driver's license suspended for six months.

But the award for common sense goes to Stephanie Webster (13), the Leon County court division chief, for taking Shakir's lack of criminal history and his character into account.

"We don't feel someone should be punished for the rest of his life for one bad decision," Webster said. "I wouldn't say that it's common."

OUTRAGEOUS REVENGE SCORE OF THE WEEKEND

Chaminade-Madonna (14) vs. Pompano Beach (15): The former powerhouse Lions are trying to re-establish themselves and the fighting Pompanoes got the message loud and clear with an 83-0 victory.

The victory was made even more outrageous considering the Lions were defeated by Pompano last season. Chaminade scored 42 points in the second quarter -- a Broward County record -- and the 83-0 victory ties the county record for the largest ever. In 1951 Blanche Ely (16) defeated Gifford High (17) by a similar score.

AWESOME UPLIFTING SCORE OF THE WEEK

Less than a year after suffering a humiliating 91-0 loss to Naples (18), former state finalists Estero (19) snapped a 23-game losing streak with a 44-22 victory over St. John Neumann (20).

The hero of the contest was sophomore quarterback Ryan Sides (21), who made his first-ever start for the Wildcats as an injury replacement for senior Will Davis (22). Sides went 20-of-24 for 270 yards and a touchdown.

Estero coach Rich Dombroski (23) has been known for his quotables in the past but this time it was elation.

"It's a huge step for us," Estero coach Rich Dombroski said. "I'm ecstatic for the kids. It's been a long time coming. Ryan Sides stepped up and did a phenomenal job. He read everything right and threw every ball we needed him to throw."

Estero's next potential victim? Lemon Bay (24).
